CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme
The Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC-EES) is a UK government scheme recently
introduced which aims to improve energy efficiency and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted
by UK businesses.
Participation in the scheme is mandatory for most UK companies who use electricity through half-hourly
metering.
The government intends to publish a performance league table for all participants in terms of how well
they have reduced their CO2 emissions. Carbon allowances, which must be purchased at the start of the
scheme by each participating company, will then be redistributed according to the league table ranking.
Whereas failure to comply may result in heavy fines or financial penalties, actually having a proactive
CRC-EES strategy can lead to substantial energy and financial savings.
